Recalling old times in Berlin

Another year had began with new students in the History class of Year 10. We had completed our unit on the Peace Treaties. Now beginning a unit on the History of Germany, 1918 - 39. An interesting lesson begins with a recall on how Germany was punished at Versailles after WW1. This was followed by a brief outline of how the Germans reacted to the so called "Dictated Peace or Diktat". There were demonstrations staged by mobs and workers in Berlin.

Berlin - yes that great city with so much History. Says one student.

Then begin questions and suggestions about Berlin and finally a proposal! what proposal!

One students says! My dad was a diplomat in Berlin. We surely must go and see that city.

Another student responds: I would rather go and visit Versailles and see the Hall of Mirrors where that dreadful treaty was signed.

Oh No! exclaimed another student: I would want to go to Rome - Yes Rome - a city with so much ancient history.

Well we can visit all the three cities and satisfy all our curiosity.

This discussion took place way back in September 2009.

What began as an innocent suggestion to visit the city where her dad worked several years ago now becomes a reality as students from that class of Year 10 will be taking a tour of the three cities beginning on 28th March 2010.

The students will be writing their daily experiences about their tour on this blog.

  3. Our unit with the Y10 History students this morning was on Hitler's Plans for Germany and how he had laid out these plans in his book "Mein Kampf".

The students had interesting discussions about whether governments in Europe should have been worried about Hitler's coming to power. A few students felt Hitler's plans were justified considering that later most people objected to the Versailles Treaty.

One of the students wonders whether we will be able to see the "Mein Kampf". This makes the trip to Berlin the more interesting and important.

  4. Interesting history was one of the my best subjects in school. Learning the european history what touched me most was the Berlin Conference of 1884 which saw Africa being shared among the super powers of that time. Now living here in Germany where this took place I have learnt alot. What I am not sure is whether those documents about Hilter´s "Mein Kampf" are in the public domain but I will suggest to the students to watch a film called "Der Führer". This shows all the atrocities that were committed during the second world war.

  6. THats interesting. I personally would like to hear the students views about why they feel hitlers plans were justified, as well as the others who felt otherwise.

Thanks for the pictures. Hope we'll see more.
